Before you can decide which are the best car speakers for you, there are first a few things you are going to need to ask yourself:

  • How much am I willing to spend?
  • Do I want to go for sound quality?
  • Do I want to go for Loudness?
  • Do I want Front speakers?
  • Do I want Rear speakers?
  • What sizes do I want?

Once you have these answers you will then be able to make a better decision on which are the best car speakers for your specific needs. This is easier said than done. So to make things a bit more easier, we have given you some brief information below to help you out with your decision.

How much am I willing to spend?

I lot of people might think that if you want the best car speakers you are going to have to pay the “best” price. Now this doesn’t necessarily have to be the case. Good car speakers vary between 25$ dollars up 200$ So what’s the difference then? It generally comes down to three things:

  • speaker components
  • assembly
  • sound quality

If the speakers are made out of good components and are well assembled (Ferrite magnets, Titanium, fibreglass) this also means that you are getting better sound quality and more durability, thus also paying a higher price. Now in practice if you were to put a 50$ next to 150$ car speaker (of the same type) chances are that you wouldn’t here that much of a difference, UNTIL you start cranking up the volume, that’s where most cheaper car speakers tend to fail. As a result, a lot of times noise distortion will occur and in worst cases you will just blow up the speakers. So it generally all comes down to how much you want to pay for the sound quality in your car AND how long you want them to last.

Sound quality

Not only do good components and assembly determine the sound quality of the speaker but also how the speaker is “configured” In general there are 3 types of configurations:

  • 1way speaker
  • 2way  speaker
  • 3 way speaker

The higher the configuration, the better the sound quality you will get. This is because a 3 way speaker (as compared to a  1 way speaker) consists out of three speaker systems (1 tweeter for the high sounds and two midrange for midrange sounds) which can deliver a broader spectrum of sound frequencies e.g. (50 hz – low pitch  up to 21000khz – high pitch)

Below are some example’s 1-2-3way speakers.

2 way speaker

3 way speaker

 3-Way Speaker

A 1-way speaker consists mainly out of one “cone”, where as a 3-way speaker is a combination of 3, thus producing better sound quality

It’s also possible to buy a 2-way or 3-way Car speaker system which consists out of different “Components”  These are called Component systems. Instead of everything being built into one system (like above) a component system is built out of separate speaker components which are connected to each other. See examples below:

2-Way Component system

This will give an even better sound quality because there is minimal interference between the speaker components.  The price of course is generally higher than your standard 2-3way system.

Sound Loudness

Maybe you are not really interested in sound quality but more how loud it sounds or maybe both, either way, a good reference for determining how much sound a speaker can produce is looking at the power output of the speaker. (Watts)  The higher the power output (e.g 300 Watts) the more sound it will produce. Do keep in mind that there are two types of power outputs voor car speakers:

  • Watts Peak
  • Watts RMS

The Watts Peak of a car speaker indicates the maximum power output the speaker can handle, for short periods.
The Watts RMS indicates the average power output the car speaker can handle for longer periods.

This is important depending on what kind of music you listen to. If you are someone who listens to hip hop or dance music, you are going to want to pay attention to what the Watt Peaks are of the car speaker you are interested in considering the hard bass that is in that type of music.

If you are someone who listens more to Rock music, you are going to want to pay more attention to what the Watt RMS are of the car speaker you are interested in considering the continues bass guitars etc that occur in that type of music.

So Overall it’s best to keep in mind that if you want to play your music loud, then you should mainly focus on what the Watts RMS output is of the speaker is en then look at the Watts Peak which will always be higher then the Watts RMS.

Speaker Size

The size of car speaker you need/want is determined by a few factors:

  • Mounting size in the front of your car (usually in the door panel or in the dashboard corner of your car)
  • Mounting size in the back of your car (Doors or trunk panel)
  • Creativity =)

There are different sizes of car speakers that be can placed in the front and back of your car. Car speaker sizes can range anyway from 3-1/2 inches to 6-3/4 inches. Most cars come with typical 6-1/2 inch speakers that are medium sized and mid-ranged to provide the perfect sound quality. It’s always best to check with your manufacturer’s manual to find out the exact speaker size that will fit in your car.

If you like a certain car speaker but it won’t fit in the standard mounting of your car, there are always way to make it fit. Some manufacturers (like JBL) come with special adapters to make them fit even if your standard mounting is different. If the standard mounting is way off, you can make a mold out of fiber glass or wood to make them fit. if they don’t fit in the back you can either cut out holes in your trunk frame or replace the whole frame with a wooden mdf frame. It all comes down to how creative you are.
